Atempo hopes to move into the top tier of data protection vendors with a portfolio of offerings that span file and e-mail backup and archiving.
The company today unveiled Atempo Digital Archive for Messaging (ADAM) 2.0, a new e-mail and instant messaging archiving software aimed at bigger enterprises struggling to cope with data growth, e-discovery and regulatory compliance issues.
Developed for both mailbox management and long-term electronic messaging retention, the software is also integrated with the company’s file archiving software, Atempo Digital Archive (ADA). Atempo terms the combined offerings Integrated Content Archiving (ICA).
Brian Babineau, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, said Atempo competes with a few vendors that have successfully combined e-mail and file backup and archiving, namely Mimosa Systems, Symantec (NASDAQ: SYMC) and EMC (NYSE: EMC).
“There are plenty of e-mail archive solutions on the market, but only a few have integrated file and e-mail archiving, and even fewer have both backup and archiving in their portfolios,” said Babineau. “Atempo has the right features, namely message stubbing, to attack the broader market. Also, the company has a solid brand in Europe, where e-mail archiving is just starting to take off.”
ADAM 2.0 is the first release of an e-mail archiving solution from Atempo since its acquisition of Lighthouse Global Technologies in February.
Karim Toubba, Atempo’s vice president for marketing and product management, said the company’s products share a common management layer, indexing and search capabilities, de-duplicationor single-instance storage, and reporting, among other features.
“We’re able to offer an organization the ability to backup and recover across all types of content, including unstructured files, e-mail and IM,” said Toubba.
Atempo said ADAM integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes and SMTP and lets companies migrate e-mail data from primary storage onto inexpensive storage media while eliminating duplicate data.
The ADAM 2.0 server platform runs on Windows, Linux and UNIX operating systems and will be generally available on June 30.
